574 girls raped, over 2,300 child marriages reported in 8 months

136 girls were trafficked over the same period

As many as 574 girls were raped and 2,301 child marriages were reported across the country in the last eight months. 

Among the rape survivors, 84 were gang raped, according to a report published on Friday. 

National Girl Child Advocacy Forum Secretary Nasima Akhtar Jolly unveiled the information at the National Press Club. 

The report titled 'January-August 2022: Girl Child Situation Monitoring Report' contains data from 24 national, local and online dailies from January to August this year.

According to the report, an average of 288 child marriages took place per month while a total of 589 child marriages were prevented in the eight months.

It added that 49 minors were raped after false promises of marriages and as many as 20 were killed after rape. 

 Meanwhile, 87 minor girls and 43 girls with special needs have been victims of attempted rape, the report said. 

In addition, 76 girls have experienced sexual harassment,186 killed and 181 committed suicide in the last eight months.

Moreover, 136 girls were trafficked during the same period among whom 74 were abducted.

As many as 13 girls were tortured and five committed suicide fordowry. 

Speakers at the event reccomended swift disposal of all child abuse, rape, and murder cases in order to stop the exploitation of females,  enaction of a sexual harrassment prevention law, and raising awareness among people at all levels including ensuring safe internet in cyber security.
