BCL leader accused of assaulting RU student in university hall

The victim alleges the accused threatened to kill him like slain Buet student Abrar Fahad if he told journalists or the police about the torture

A Chhatra League leader has been accused of physically and mentally torturing a student of Rajshahi University (RU) in the university hall.

Samsul Islam, a fourth-year student of the university's Economics Department, was allegedly tortured by Chhatra League leader Bhaskar Saha, a fourth-year student of the university's Education Research Institute.

Samsul said that the incident took place in the Motihar Hall of the university from 3pm-6pm on Friday.

“The Chhatra League leader forcibly snatched about Tk20,000 of mobile phone servicing belonging to me with a knife at my throat. Besides, he threatened to kill me like the slain Buet student Abrar Fahad if I told journalists or the police about the torture,” he added.

Accused Bhaskar is the general secretary of the Motihar Hall branch of the university Chhatra League unit.

When asked about the incident, Bhaskar Saha said that the “false allegations” were a way to frame him.

“I have not demanded any money from anyone. I did not even physically and mentally torture Shamsul. I demand that the university administration and related authorities investigate the matter and take action,” he added.

M Tarek Noor, student adviser of the university, said: “I have already received the complaint. I have sent him to the medical centre for first aid. I have handed over the complaint letter to the proctor's office to look into the matter.”

Meanwhile, on Friday night, the university administration formed a three-member investigation committee to investigate the matter.

University Proctor Prof Asabul Haque said: “Based on the complaint, we are looking into the whole matter. Subject to the investigation, criminals will be brought under exemplary punishment in this incident.”
