Bangladesh starts producing Covid test kits

With this domestic kit, it will be possible to confirm the initial presence of coronavirus in only four to five hours

Bangladesh Council of Science and Industrial Research (BCSIR) has developed an affordable Covid-19 detection kit of Tk250 for the first time ever. 

The matter was confirmed at a BCSIR press conference in Dhaka on Sunday.

According to BCSIR, with this domestic kit, it will be possible to confirm the initial presence of coronavirus in only four to five hours.

BCSIR Chairman Prof Dr Aftab Ali Sheikh said this is an incredible discovery. 

“As a result, people of the country can now get tested for Covid at low cost. The Department of Drug Administration has already approved the production of this kit. Besides, Bangladesh Medical Research Council has given ethical clearance for this kit,” he added.

He also said that more than 10 million samples have been tested in the country so far, for which a large number of kits for this test had to be imported. 

“With this new domestically-produced kit, a lot of time and money will be saved,” Dr Aftab observed.
