Bangladesh Permanent Representative Muhith presents credentials to UN chief

He has succeeded Rabab Fatima, who has now been appointed the new UN under-secretary general

The newly appointed Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations (UN) Muhammad Abdul Muhith has presented his credentials to the UN chief. 

After presenting his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday, he conveyed greetings from the president and prime minister, according to a media statement. 

Muhammad Abdul Muhith is the 16th Permanent Representative (PR) of Bangladesh to the UN since 1974.

Muhith took charge of the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to the United Nations on July 28. 

He succeeded Rabab Fatima, the former permanent representative who has now been appointed UN under-secretary general and high representative to the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States in New York.

A career diplomat, before taking on the current role, Muhith was serving as the Bangladesh envoy to Austria and the permanent representative of Bangladesh to the UN offices and other international organisations in Vienna, with concurrent accreditation as ambassador to Hungary, Slovenia and Slovakia

Before that, he served as the ambassador to Denmark and was concurrently accredited to Estonia and Iceland.

Muhith joined foreign services on 1993 and belongs to the 11th batch of Bangladesh Civil Service. 

With a career spanning 29 years, he served in many capacities in the Bangladesh missions in Kuwait, Rome, Doha and Washington, as well as in the permanent mission to the UN in New York as a counselor.

He was also posted to the headquarters in Dhaka and served in different capacities, including director general for Americas with occasional additional responsibility as director general for Europe.

He completed his BSS and MSS in sociology from the Dhaka University and holds a diploma in Arabic language from the University of Kuwait.
