Bangladesh’s first 6-lane bridge to be inaugurated in September

Kalna Bridge over Madhumati River in Gopalganj is expected to boost local tourism, industries and trade

Kalna Bridge, the country’s first six-lane bridge, built at the Kalna point of the Madhumati River in Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj, is set to be opened to traffic in September.

The construction work of the bridge that links Kashiani upazila and Lohagara upazila of Narail is in the final stage.

The inauguration of the bridge is expected to give a boost to tourism, industries and trade in 10 districts of the southwestern region of the country.

Besides, the road communication system will improve with Benapole land port through the bridge.

Sources familiar with the matter say that instead of travelling through Magura-Faridpur, travelling to Dhaka from Narail, Jessore, Benapole land port and Khulna will be made through the bridge.

After the inauguration of the bridge, Benapole-Dhaka and Jessore-Dhaka distance will be reduced by 113km while the Khulna-Dhaka distance by 121km and Narail-Dhaka distance by 181km.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded the bridge under the Cross-Border Road Network Improvement Project of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD).

Japan’s Tekken Corporation and YBC in association with Bangladesh’s Abdul Monem Limited are joint contractors of this bridge.

Md Ashrafuzzaman, project manager of the bridge and the executive engineer of Narail RHD, said 95% of the work of the bridge has been completed so far. The construction of the link road has also been completed.

Engineer Syed Ghiyasuddin, sub-project manager of this bridge, said this is the first six-lane bridge in the country. The bridge will be the country’s largest curved-like-a-bow bridge.

Moin Uddin Ahmed, assistant professor of Bengali Department of Gopalganj Government Bangabandhu College and a resident of Kashiani Upazila Sadar, said: “The long-term suffering of the people of at least 10 districts of the southwestern region on both sides will be reduced after the inauguration of the bridge.”

It is the dream bridge of the people of this area. This bridge will be the most spectacular bridge in South Asia, he added.
