ACC approves graft case against ex-policeman over embezzlement

The accused took around Tk28.50 crore from customers by creating an e-commerce platform ‘E-Orange’ in a bid, says ACC

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday approved a case against former Banani police inspector (investigation) Sheikh Sohel Rana for embezzling over Tk28 crore.

The approval came from the regular meeting of the commission on Monday.

The commission appointed its Deputy Director Monaim Hossain as an investigating officer to probe allegations of embezzlement and money laundering.

According to commission, Sohel Rana took around Tk28.50 crore from the customers by creating an e-commerce platform “E-Orange” in a bid to make more profit.

He later laundered Tk28.47 crore.

He was charged under Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012, the commission reported.

Earlier, on April 7, the High Court had directed the commission to hold an inquiry if E-Orange had laundered its clients’ money.
