Family of Bangladeshi sailor, who died in missile attack in Ukraine, gets 10L in aid

Merchant Marine Officers' Association blames Bangladesh Shipping Corporation for incident

Update : 20 May 2022, 04:20 PM

The family of Md Hadisur Rahman, who was killed in March in a missile attack on a Bangladeshi vessel stranded at a Ukraine port, has received Tk10.27 lakh in aid from Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers' Association (BMMOA).

The organization handed over the money to Hadisur’s younger brother, Golam Maola Prince, at a ceremony at its office in Dhaka on Friday.

BMMOA President Captain Md Anam Chowdhury presided over the event, while General Secretary Md Shakhawat Hossain read out a statement.

The association said “Banglar Samriddhi” crew member Hadisur had been killed due to the negligence of the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) in operating the vessel.

It added that no BMMOA representative had been included in the panel formed to probe into the incident despite its request, and the committee had yet to release its investigation report.

BMMOA demanded that the probe body release its report without delay and that Hadisur’s family be appropriately compensated at once.

“Banglar Samriddhi” got stuck at Ukraine’s Port Olvia with 29 crew members after Russia started its invasion of its European neighbour in February.

On March 2, Hadisur Rahman was killed when a missile hit the ship.

On March 5, the other 28 sailors left the bunker (shelter house) adjacent to the port and set sail for Moldova.

The next day, they crossed the border and reached Romania.

On March 9, the 28 crew members returned to Dhaka from Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight from Bucharest airport in Romania.

The body of Md Hadisur Rahman reached Dhaka on March 14.

The Ukraine-war victim was laid to rest at his family graveyard in Betagi upazila of Barguna the next day.
