Over a thousand vehicles are stuck on the Dhaka-Khulna highway due to a massive tailback from Daulatdia terminal disrupting cargo transportation between the southern region and the rest of the country.
A nearly 10-kilometre tailback of more than 1,200 vehicles was seen on the highway on Saturday morning owing to the lack of ferries.
Even though buses and trucks carrying perishable goods are allowed to cross the Padma on a priority basis, trucks carrying non-perishable goods have to wait a long time, drivers complained.
According to them, it’s taking the Dhaka-bound vehicles over three hours to cross a kilometre of the roads.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Daulatdia Terminal Manager Shihab Uddin says that while there are an adequate number of ferries, the delay has been caused by the closure of Paturia terminal where a ferry carrying vehicles capsized on Wednesday.
“Right now, there is additional traffic in Shimulia in addition to the south-bound vehicles. There are currently 17 ferries on the route,” he said.
Meanwhile, salvage operations are still underway at the Paturia terminal as salvage ships Hamza and Rustom are recovering the vehicles that sank with the Amanat Shah ro-ro ferry.
According to SM Sanowar Hossain, the commander of Hamza, the salvage mission for the capsized ferry will begin once all the vehicles are brought ashore.
The Amanat Shah ro-ro ferry capsized on Wednesday, taking at least 17 vehicles carrying goods down with it leading to communication slowing down between districts.
