Bablu, a tile worker, was on the seventh floor of a building when the attack on a temple in the area took place

On the evening of October 13, Bablu, a tile worker, was engaged in his work in the westside room on the seventh floor of the under-construction Business Park Trade Centre in Hajiganj, Chandpur.

At one point, he and his co-workers heard a loud noise outside, prompting them to suspend work.

His supervisor, Md Hasan, asked him to stay put before going out to see what was happening.

Bablu went to the west window of the building beside the room and was trying to figure out what was happening on the Comilla-Chandpur road in the Hajiganj Bazar area. All of a sudden, he was hit by a stray bullet in his head and he went down with a scream.

Hearing Bablu’s scream, his nephew, Siam Ali, rushed to the spot and saw him lying on the floor in a bloody state.

Siam is a construction worker by profession. He was on the sixth floor where he along with Bablu and many others were staying at night.

Siam took Bablu to Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors pronounced him dead on arrival at 9pm that day.

Siam, who is currently staying at his home in Chapainawabganj, told Dhaka Tribune that he and Bablu had entered the construction sector three years ago.

Bablu’s scream had awakened him that night, he said, while chronicling the night’s events, adding that a pool of blood had formed around the body of his uncle, who died before they could reach the hospital.

“It was very strange. He was standing at the window on the seventh floor of a building that is nearly 200 yards from the temple where the attack took place,” he said.

Law enforcers have cordoned off the spot with wood and bricks.

Mizanur Rahman, another labourer working on the floor, said Bablu was a generous and uncomplicated person who had never got into any quarrels with other workers there.

Pointing towards the spot where Bablu’s bullet-hit body had been lying, he said police visited the place on October 15 and recovered the bullet from there.

The building is situated around 100 metres east of the Lakshmi Narayan Akhra temple, where the miscreants’ attack took place following a viral Facebook post regarding the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran in Comilla.

When asked about the matter, Inspector Ibrahim Khalil said there was no reason for police to fire at a person who had not been attacking the temple, but he could not confirm the source of the bullet either.

The inspector, however, admitted that police had indeed fired some blanks to disperse the mob.

Meanwhile, Siam said regardless of the mysterious nature of the shooting, Bablu’s family was now left without a source of income.

The future of his two daughters, both under five, was now uncertain, he said.

“Did a simple, modest person like him deserve such a death?” Siam questioned.
