The observance of 'Research Day-2021' is time-befitting which would encourage the working researchers, physicians and all concerned, says the prime minister

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed hope that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is playing a pioneering role in providing health services to people and hoped it would also lead in the country's medical research arena.

She said this in a message on Tuesday, on the eve of “Research Day-2021” of BSMMU to be observed on Wednesday.

The premier said the observance of the day is time-befitting which would encourage the working researchers, physicians and all concerned as well as inspire the other physicians of the country in providing treatment.

She said the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had put special emphasis on medical research and healthcare services considering the matter of ensuring sound health of the countrymen side by side with reforming the fundamental infrastructure of the newly independent war-ravaged Bangladesh.

Following the footprints of Bangabandhu, the Awami League government established a medical university for the first time in 1998, aimed at creating a foundation of necessary medical research to ensure sound health of the people, she said.

This institution will conduct quality research work and create a modern outlook for establishing an advanced healthcare system for patients, she said.

Sheikh Hasina said since assuming power, the incumbent government has kept BSMMU and its research and educational activities under priority.

Without their own research, it is very tough to establish longstanding and time-befitting healthcare services, she said.

She said the government has formulated a pro-people health system for all. The number of beds has increased at hospitals. General and specialized hospitals have been built and specialized healthcare has increased manifold, she added.

Healthcare services have spread to the grassroots through community clinics and the medical education system has been extended massively by establishing new medical colleges, she said, adding that the importance of medical research has further increased.

She wished for the success of all the programs marking the Research Day-2021 of BSMMU.
