Covid-19: Bangladesh records 5 more deaths, 289 new cases

Bangladesh reported five fresh fatalities from Covid-19 while the caseload jumped by 289 in the 24 hours to 8am on Monday.

With the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 27,828, while the number of total infections rose to 1,567,981 in the country.

On the other hand, another 413 patients recovered from the infectious disease across the country, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,531,740.

As many as 20,773 samples were tested across the country, yielding a positivity rate of 1.39%.

The overall infection rate in the country stands at 15.31%.

The seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was 7.14 on Monday.

In terms of deaths per division, Dhaka and Chittagong tallied two fatalities each while Khulna reported one.

Of the new patients, Dhaka logged 210 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Chittagong with 29. No new cases were reported in 27 districts of the country. 

Meanwhile, the latest figures have put the recovery rate at 97.69% while the mortality rate remains static at 1.77%.

Around 40.28 million people in the country have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Of them, some 20.59 million have taken both doses, according to DGHS data on Sunday.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year. The first death was reported 10 days later.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 4.9 million lives and infected more than 244 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 221 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
