Communal tensions gripped Bangladesh over the past few days following allegations of the Quran being dishonoured at a Comilla puja pavilion on October 13, claiming seven lives as yet

Amid the recent spike in nationwide attacks on Hindus centering the alleged desecration of Holy Quran in Comilla, the Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad or BBBCOP has announced that it would stage protests over the persecutions on Saturday.

In a press release on Friday, signed by BBBCOP General Secretary Rana Das Gupta, the platform said mass hunger strike, sit-in program and demonstrations would be held between 6am and 12noon in every upazila and district.

Communal tensions have gripped Bangladesh over the past few days following allegations of the Quran being dishonoured at a puja pavilion in Comilla on October 13, triggering violence in several districts across the country.

Security was ramped up at houses of worship, and Border Guard Bangladesh troops were dispatched to more than two dozen districts. The 10-day festival came to a close on October 15 with the immersion of Durga idols.

At least seven people were killed over the incident in different parts of the country, with over 450 arrested and 72 cases filed till Wednesday over the communal violence.

Hundreds of Hindus lost their homes, businesses while many temples and puja venues were vandalized following the Comilla incident.

The government and law enforcement agencies have described the incidents as “planned” in a bid to destabilize the country.

The attacks also prompted Delhi to call up Dhaka. Sources said that Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami as well as the four consulates in Bangladesh have been in touch with officials.

However, police arrested Iqbal Hossain, the man responsible for keeping a Quran at a Comilla puja venue which triggered the attacks, in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday.

He was brought to Comilla Police Lines on Friday.
