Locals and police said the man is mentally unstable
Police have detained a man over the vandalism of two temples in Tangail’s Sadar upazila on Sunday.
However, a complaint was not lodged over the matter as the perpetrator is mentally unstable, said the upazila’s Kamgari Police Outpost in-charge Mosharraf Hossain.
According to Tangail district puja celebration committee General Secretary Pradip Kumar Goon Jhantu, the person was seen roaming around a temple at a home in Belta village.
“He went away when a neighbouring woman and local Muslims asked him what he was doing there,” he said.
Pradip added that they later came to find the idols desecrated.
“The person went to another old temple at a house and vandalised it,” he said before adding that the owner of that house had recently died.
According to Pradip, locals caught the man in the act when he finished vandalizing the second temple and was moving on to a next room where the Durga Puja was recently held.
“We are not pressing charges as the man is mentally ill. No case has been filed,” he said.
