Hindu man found dead in pond next to temple in Noakhali

The body of a Hindu man has been found at a pond next to a temple in Noakhali on Saturday, a day after attacks on Durga Puja venues and Hindu homes that left another killed. 

The body of 20-year-old Pranto Das was recovered from a pond next to the ISKCON temple at Begumganj Upazila’s Chaumuhani on Saturday morning.

President of the Noakhali chapter of the Hindu,Buddhist,Chrishtian Unity Council Kishor Ray claimed that Pranto was killed during the attacks on the temples on Friday. 

Police said it was not clear that he had died of Friday’s violence.

The body bore marks of injuries, but the cause of death can be only confirmed after an autopsy, said Additional Superintendent of Police Md Shah Imran.

According to the police, the mob marched near College Road and DB Road in Begumganj on Friday afternoon and vandalized the area.

A Hindu man, Jatan Kumar Saha, 42, died during the clash and a total of 17 people, including the OC of Begumganj police, were injured in the attack, Additional SP Imran said on Friday.

“During this attack, one man died and a total of 18 people were injured, including the acting-officer-in-charge of Begumganj police station Kamruzzaman Shikdar,” he told the local media.

There were sporadic attacks and vandalism from 2:15pm on Friday. At 5pm, the situation was brought under control.

The mob attacked, vandalized, and looted Hindu households, businesses, and several temples in Chaumuhani during their march, said police.

On Wednesday, at least four people were killed in Chandpur and scores injured as mobs attacked Hindu temples and Durga Puja venues in several districts, following social media posts about the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a Durga Puja venue in Comilla.

Government and law enforcement agencies described the incidents as “planned” with the aim of destabilizing the country.
