Sellers blame supply shortage for price hike

The retail prices of daily essentials have gone out of control in the capital’s kitchen markets, even though the Covid-19 lockdown is not in force, triggering sufferings of the lower- and middle-income people.

Onion and broiler chicken has become costlier compared to last week as sellers blamed lower supply for the price hike.

Broiler chicken was being sold at Tk175-180 per kg on Friday, while Sonali chicken at Tk320-340 per kg.

Local and imported onion prices were increased by Tk35-40 per kg and are now being sold at Tk75 to 80 per kg.

According to the latest report of the government marketing agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) on Thursday, the retail price of domestic onions has risen by about 58% in a month.

Meanwhile, the price of potatoes remained as low as Tk25 per kg.

Tanvir Ahmed, an official of a private bank who came to Karwan Bazar wholesale market, said the authorities should control the market now as the prices of most products are going out of control.

Meanwhile, although winter vegetables have arrived in the market, the prices remained high.

Radish is being sold at Tk50 to 70 while small cauliflowers and cabbages are sold at Tk30 to 50.

At the same time, the prices of carrots have gone up and are being sold at Tk100-160 per kg.

Another buyer, Azizul Islam, said the way commodity prices are soaring, it is turning impossible for the commoners to survive.

He also demanded that the prices of rice and other daily necessities be brought down by taking action against the hoarders.

Flour, which was sold at Tk35 per kg last week, is now being sold at Tk42 per kg.

The price of local and imported garlic varied from Tk60 to Tk150 per kg.
