More than 5000 infected in last 3 weeks

The number of dengue cases is expected to decline from next month as the government has taken necessary steps, Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam said on Monday.

The minister was speaking at a dialogue organized by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat.

“Many people left Dhaka for a long time due to the Covid-19 restrictions and Eid vacation. During this time, Aedes mosquitoes breed in stagnant water at the empty houses and under construction buildings, leading to the dengue outbreak,” he added.

The number of dengue cases in the country continues to climb alarmingly, with more than 5,000 people infected in the past three weeks.

According to the DGHS, a total of 2,286 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in July, while 7,698 people were admitted to hospitals in August and 5,424 people were infected in the first 20 days of this month.

However, Tajul Islam claimed the dengue outbreak in the country is not as bad as similar outbreaks in Vietnam, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines.

“Many children died of dengue and many people lost their relatives this year. We don’t want to lose anyone, and we will take steps based on this year’s experience,” he said.

On the other hand, the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) on Sunday claimed 6,000-7,000 new cases of dengue were being reported in Dhaka every day, but they were not being recorded by the DGHS as the government body only records cases that result in hospitalization.

CGS Chairman and entomologist Dr Manjur Ahmed Chowdhury claimed the two Dhaka city corporations had failed to take steps to control the Aedes mosquito population and they were looking to shift the blame on to the people.

DAP to be finalized in December

At the BSRF dialogue, LGRD Minister Md Tajul Islam also said the Detailed Area Plan (DAP) of Dhaka would be finalized in December.

“There is no scope for building Dhaka like other beautiful cities in the world, as many high-rise buildings have already been built in an unplanned way and the city is home to 20 million people. We can’t force people to leave Dhaka. That is why we are expanding civic amenities in urban areas,” said the minister.

Regarding development and renovations during the monsoon season, Tajul Islam said: “We are thinking about it and the process of taking action against those involved in irregularities surrounding renovations and development work is underway.”

BSRF President Tapan Biswas and General Secretary Masudul Hoque also addressed the dialogue, among others.
