The Liberation War Museum this year marked its 25th anniversary

The Liberation War Museum, located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Saturday received seven valuable paintings related to the 1971 liberation war, other important documents, and more than Tk7,300,000 in donations.

The paintings were once in the USA and collected by Shahriar Kabir in 1998 and 1999, according to Shahriar, president of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee.

He handed those seven paintings, which were exhibited in Kolkata in September 1971, over to the Liberation War Museum.

The paintings are:  by Mustafa Monowar, Ranajeet Kumar Niyogee, Cry by Biren Som, Humanity Crucified by Devdas Chakrabarty, Bangladesh'71 by Nitun Kundu, Mother and Child by Abul Bark Alvee and Evacuees by Pranesh Mondol.

While addressing the ceremony at the auditorium of the Liberation War Museum, Shahriar Kabir said: "Many artists and singers were involved in promotion works [bringing forth the war details in front of the world] during 1971. But only two or three of these heroes are recognized. I will continue discussing these cultural activists till my death."

He stressed that it is a shame that there is neither any documentary nor any written chronicles covering our liberation war in its totality.

Sultana Kamal handed over a letter to the museum which was written by her mother, Poet Sufia Kamal to both of her daughters who fled to India to take part in the liberation war.

"My mother could make people understand big issues by writing only a few words. Acknowledging our letter as a gift in which we both informed about our safe escape and arrival at the war training camp, mother strategically replied because she was concerned the letter might fall into the wrong hands before it reached us," she added.

That strategic letter was handed over to the museum on Saturday.

"I can proudly say that my parents sent their daughters to war," Sultana added.

Important international documents in favour of the Liberation War were also handed to the museum by Mary Francis Dunham, wife of Daniel C Dunham who was one of the very first faculty members of the Department of Architecture, BUET from the USA. Ekattor TV CEO Samia Zaman brought those from New York.

The books of late Prof Anisuzzaman, singer Abdul Jabbar's recorded tape, and martyred intellectual Dr Azharul Haque's ceiling fan were also handed to the museum by the family members and collectors of those items.

Dr Sarwar Ali, founding trusty of the museum, expressed hope that the museum would run under the ownership of ordinary people.

Sara Zaker, a trustee of the museum, remarked that they have got many valuable souvenirs of the independence struggle.

"If we cannot continue the activities of the museum, the history of the Liberation War can not be preserved properly," Sara added.

Moreover, the donation includes Tk60 lakh by Mir Nasir Hossain, managing director of Mir Akhter Hossain Ltd.

He got recognition as honorary patron of the museum after the donation.
