Biman pilot Captain Nawshad passes away

He suffered a heart attack mid-flight on Friday

Biman Bangladesh Airlines pilot Captain Nawshad Ataul Quaiyum has passed away at Hope Hospital, in Nagpur of India.

With the consent of his family, his ventilation was taken off at around 11am on Monday, and he was pronounced dead. The process of bringing back his body is underway, confirmed Bangladesh Airlines Pilots Association (BAPA) President Captain Mahbubur Rahman.

On Sunday, the authorities of Hope Hospital said he was clinically dead, Captain Shoaib Chowdhury, a senior pilot of the national flag carrier, told Dhaka Tribune.

The Dhaka-bound Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Muscat, Oman made an emergency landing at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in India’s state of Maharashtra on Friday, when the pilot, Captain Nawshad Quaiyum, suffered a heart attack mid-air.

Immediately after landing, he was sent to Kingsway Hospitals in Nagpur.

The Biman flight (BG-022), which made the emergency landing at Nagpur airport, departed for Dhaka on the same night with all of its 124 passengers.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday expressed deep shock at the death of Captain Nowshad Ataul Quaiyum.

She prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family, UNB reported. 

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mohammad Mahbub Ali and Secretary to the Ministry Mohammad Mokammel Hossain also expressed deep shock at the premature demise of the pilot, said Tanvir Ahmed, public relation officers of the ministry.

In a message, the state minister said: “Captain Nowshad was a skilled pilot and he gave utmost importance to the safety of passengers and their lives while performing his duty. Biman has lost a skilled pilot like him at his death.”
