Panic caused by the news led to his death, according to witnesses
An 80-year-old freedom fighter has died right after learning that he had tested positive for Covid-19.
The tragic incident happened right in front of Tungipara Upazila Health Complex in Gopalganj on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased, Yusuf Ali Sheikh, was from Banshbaria village in Dumuria union under Tungipara upazila in Gopalganj.
For the past five days, he had fever and other symptoms of Covid-19, his family members said. He was also suffering from old-age complications.
On Tuesday, Yusuf’s wife and brother-in-law took him to Tungipara Upazila Health Complex for Covid-19 test. The healthcare workers collected his sample and ran an antigen test, the result of which came positive in just 10 minutes.
Hearing the news, Yusuf had a panic attack, which led to his death right in front of the health complex.
Dr Jasim Uddin, the health and family planning officer, said the air at the facility grew heavy by Yusuf’s sudden death.
A team from the Islamic Foundation performed his namaz-e-janaza and buried him following the Covid-19 safety rules.
Before his funeral, a team of Bangladesh Police led by Tungipara police station OC FM Nasim and Tungipara Upazila Nirbahi Officer AKM Hedayetul Islam gave a guard of honour to pay respect to the freedom fighter.
