In response to an emergency 999 call, police rescued a girl and arrested her alleged rapist
Chittagong police arrested a man after his failed attempt to rape a schoolgirl, who fended him off by throwing powdered pepper in his face before calling the national emergency helpline “999”.
The arrestee Jahangir Alam, 22, was apprehended from Agrabad CDA residential area of Chittagong city Monday night.
According to police, prior to Monday night’s incident, Jahangir used blackmail to rape the girl once before. He did so by threatening to spread an obscenely doctored photo of her.
The previous incident of rape occurred when the girl, a ninth-grade schoolgirl, was home alone while both her father and mother were out for work.
Following the incident, the girl kept quiet about the matter out of fear and shame.
On Monday night, as the girl was once again home alone, Jahangir tried to break in and rape her. However, this time before he could get through the door, the girl got her hands on some powdered pepper from her kitchen and hurled it in his face.
After immobilizing Jahangir, the girl called “999” which later lead to his arrest.
Confirming the matter, Double Mooring police station OC Md Mohsin said the girl’s mother has filed a case against Jahangir under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
