A girl committed suicide after letting her friend know through a video call in the capital's Malibagh area on Wednesday.

She was identified as Rubina Yasmin Nadi, 21, daughter of Rafiqul Islam, a sub-inspector in Betagi upazila of Barguna.

Following the video call, she hung herself from a ceiling fan at the flat she shared with her friend Marium in Gulbagh area of Malibagh.

Both of them were working at a private company called Amjara, said her roommate Marium.

She said Rubina studied law at Daffodil University. There she met Sayem, whom she later married in September or October of 2019.

After three months of marriage, they got divorced, she added.

Rubina’s cousin Sharifa Sultana, said that even after the pair separated, he would frequently send pictures and videos of their private moments to Rubina's friend Mariam, who would then show it to Rubina. Marium later deleted those but all these made Rubina very upset.

Sharifa claims that Rubina committed suicide because of such activites by Sayem.

Maryam said that Rubina did not go to work on Wednesday and continued: “I went to work and she called me at 3pm and said, ‘I am not feeling well. Can you come quickly? I'm going to die.’ Later in the video call I saw her tying a cloth with a fan.

“I hurried home and found the door locked from inside. After getting no response, I with the help of a few locals broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling fan.”

After rushing Rubina to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital the duty doctor declared her dead, added Marium.

Md Bachchu Mia, in-charge inspector of DMCH police outpost, confirmed the matter.
