Covid-19: Daily deaths, cases keep soaring in Bangladesh

85 more die; 5,727 new cases

Bangladesh has registered 5,727 Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours till Wednesday morning – the highest daily caseload recorded in over two months. 

It was on April 13 last when more people had tested positive for the deadly virus – 6,028 cases.

The latest development shows a spike in the number of infections for the past few days.

The country had recorded 4,846 cases on Tuesday, 4,636 cases on Monday, 3,641 cases on Sunday, and 3,057 cases on Saturday.

The country also recorded 85 deaths in the 24-hour period – a steep rise from Tuesday’s 75 fatalities. 

This is the highest single-day figure since April 29 when a total of 88 people lost their lives to the infectious disease.

With the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 13,787 while the number of total infections rose to 866,877.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 20.27%. As many as 28,580 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 554 authorized labs – government and private – across the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Wednesday.

To date, 6,405,075 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.53%.

Of the 85 deceased – 55 men and 30 women – 36 were from Khulna division, 19 from Dhaka, 18 from Rajshahi, seven from Chittagong, three from Mymensingh, and one each from Barisal and Rangpur divisions.

Seventy-four of them died while undergoing treatment at the different hospitals of the country, 10 died at home and one was brought dead at the hospital.

Forty-six of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 18 between 51 and 60, 11 between 41 and 50, and 10 aged between 31 and 40.

So far, 9,865 men (71.55%) and 3,922 women (28.45%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 7,434 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,620 in Chittagong, 916 in Rajshahi, 1,064 in Khulna, 410 in Barisal, 506 in Sylhet, 548 in Rangpur, and 289 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.59%.

The health authorities said 3,168 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 792,553 patients – 91.31% – have made full recovery across the country.

Currently, 34,586 people are in isolation and 55,714 are quarantined.

On March 8 last year, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019, and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 3,899,000 lives and infected as many as 180,002,000 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to worldometer.

As many as 164,763,000 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 220 countries and territories across the planet.
