The app aims to empower aspiring migrant workers

A mobile application named “SafeStep” has been launched which aims to develop knowledge about safe and orderly migration.

This app has been developed for Bangladeshi expat workers, especially those working in the different gulf countries.

Migrant workers, by using this app, will be able to digitally store records of their verbal agreements regarding migration.

The app is now available for download on the Google Play Store.

Parliamentary Caucus on Migration and Development Chair MP Barrister Shamim Haider Patwary inaugurated the app in a program organized Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) on Thursday.

Winrock Bangladesh, Elevate Hong Kong Holdings Limited, and Diginex Solutions developed the mobile app under the "Responsible Recruitment Platform for Safe Migration in Bangladesh (SafeStep)" project.

Associate Director of Elevate Hong Kong Holdings Limited Sung In Marshall, said: “The app has been developed to help and empower the aspiring migrant workers to make informed migration decisions.”

She hoped that the app will address the information gaps for migrants, facilitate digital documentation for users, and provide an online complaint mechanism.

Akib Anwar, an official of Winrock Bangladesh, in his presentation, said: “SafeStep has four features – calculators, e-learning, checklist for migration and help centre.”

Through this app, aspiring migrant workers will be able to check if they are eligible for the vacancy, he added.

He said: “They [expat workers] would be able to check their documents through the app. They can check a total of 17 topics through the SafeStep.

“They can also store audio and video recordings with their middlemen which later can be used as evidence to the court if they fall victim to any malpractices abroad, he added.

Akib said: “This is not the final version of the application. More features will be added later.”

Meanwhile, Director of Bangladeshi Ovibashi Mohila Sramik Association (BOMSA) Farida Yeasmin said: “Female migrant workers, in general, are weak in using digital means. So, training sessions should be organized so that a greater number of female workers can learn how to use this app before leaving the country.

Echoing the same, Baira Secretary-General Shamim Ahmed Chowdhury Noman, said: “Bangladesh government has taken several initiatives for the betterment of our migrant workers.”

“An app and a website named – Ami Probashi – has been launched recently to facilitate Bangladeshi citizens wishing to pursue a job abroad.”

While addressing the event, MP Shameem Patwary hoped that this app will ensure effective and safe migration for Bangladeshis.
