Nagad has disbursed the stipend for the first two quarters of last year to about 14 million primary school students in mid-March
Detectives have arrested three fraudsters from Narsingdi and Rangpur districts in connection with misappropriation of money meant for the primary education stipend.
They were arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on a specific allegation filed by Nagad, a mobile financial service of Bangladesh Post Office, that the fraudsters have misappropriated the sum from the users after knowing the PIN and OTP (one-time password) using some tricks.
The arrestees are Md Asadul, 35, from Mithapukur of Rangpur, and Abu Bakkar Siddique, 32, and Khabirul Islam, 32, of Narsingdi Sadar.
DB (financial crime investigation) Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohidul Islam on Sunday said that the arrested people were allegedly involved in manipulating the stipend money of the primary level students that the government is distributing to the mothers of the students using Nagad.
Nagad, the second largest MFS carrier in the country, has disbursed the stipend to about 14 million primary school students in mid-March for the first two quarters of last year.
In this context, in early April, a complaint was lodged with Banani Model police station in the capital. At the same time an internal inquiry committee was also formed in Nagad to look into the matter.
The financial crime investigation team recently arrested these people on the basis of Nagad’s allegations and internal investigations, the ADC Mohidul said.
