Covid kills 12,000 in Bangladesh with 33 new fatalities

Over 1,000 people died across the country in the last 16 days

The death toll from Covid-19 infection has surpassed the grim 12,000-mark in Bangladesh, with another 33 fatalities reported in the past 24 hours.

With the latest figures, the number of total fatalities surged to 12,005 as of Tuesday.

The single-day death toll is the lowest since March 25, when health authorities recorded 25 deaths.

As the country battles the second wave of the pandemic, over 1,000 people died in the last 16 days.

Fatalities in Bangladesh crossed 11,000 on April 25 and 10,000 on April 15.

Previously, it took 15 days – two weeks – to reach 9,000 deaths to 10,000, which in turn took 67 days –  nearly 10 weeks – from 8,000-mark. This shows an alarming rise in Covid-19 deaths in the country recently.

The country took 85 days or almost three months to cross 1,000 deaths threshold; 110 days to 2,000; and 133 days or around three-and-a-half months to 3,000. The 4,000th, 5,000th, and 6,000th deaths came in 161, 189 and 232 days respectively.

The country crossed the 7,000 mark in 270 days; 8,000 mark in 312; 9,000 mark in 379 days; and 10,000 mark in 394 days since the first Covid-19 death.

In the past 24 hours, Bangladesh also logged a total of 776,257 coronavirus cases with 1,230 people testing positive, according to the figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Tuesday.

Of the 33 latest deaths – 21 men and 12 women, 19 were from Dhaka division, seven from Chittagong, three from Sylhet, two from Rangpur, and one each from Rajshahi and Barisal.

All the patients died while undergoing treatment at different hospitals of the country.

Sixteen of the deceased were aged above 60, 10 between 51 and 60, five between 41 and 50, and two aged from 31 to 40.

So far, 8,699 men (72.46%) and 3,306 women (27.54%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

Since the beginning, some 6,956 people have died in Dhaka division; 2,227 in Chittagong; 630 in Rajshahi; 725 in Khulna; 365 in Barisal; 418 in Sylhet; 437 in Rangpur; and 247 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.55%.

Some 3,044 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours. So far, 715,321 patients or 92.15% have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 14,184 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 454 authorized labs – government and private – across the country.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 8.67% whereas the overall infection rate of the country stands at 13.71%.

Currently, some 18,291 people are in isolation and 47,038 are quarantined.

On March 8 last year, Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus variant, which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,319,284 lives and infected 159,659,062 people across the world till Tuesday afternoon, according to worldometer.

As many as 137,369,564 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
