Obaidul Quader: Public transports likely to resume before Eid

The minister also urges the transport owners and workers to be patient

Update : 01 May 2021, 02:35 PM

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said the government is considering the resumption of public transports ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The government is mulling easing the restrictions on public transport movement after the ongoing lockdown for the sake of people's interest, he said at a briefing at his official residence in Dhaka on Saturday.

Quader, also the general secretary of Awami League, also urged the transport owners and workers to keep patience instead of staging protests.

The minister came up with the remarks just a day after the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation on Friday called for nationwide protests on Sunday, demanding the resumption of public transport services amid the ongoing lockdown.

Stating that more than 50% transport workers are now jobless and starving, the federation said the government should allow public transports to operate while maintaining health protocols, such as by keeping half of the seats vacant.

The services of public transports have remained suspended since April 5 following countrywide lockdown enforced to contain the upsurge of Covid-19 cases and deaths.

Later, the lockdown was extended in phases, and lastly until May 5.

The minister also extended greetings to all working class people on the occasion of the historic May Day being observed in the country and across the globe on Saturday.
