The couple claims to have a licence for the firearm
A doctor couple was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Thursday morning when they tried to board a domestic flight with a firearm and bullets.
The couple -- Dr Mosahid Rahman and his spouse Dr Tanjana Mahinur -- was scheduled to fly to Jessore on a flight of US-Bangla Airlines from the airport at 9am, said Ali Azam, director of the Aviation Security Force.
While searching, a pistol, a magazine, and five bullets were recovered from their possession.
The couple was later handed over to the police, he said.
Airport police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) BM Forman Ali told Dhaka Tribune that the doctor couple claimed to have a licence for the firearm, and the matter was being investigated.
Asked why the couple did not inform the authorities as per rules while boarding an aircraft with weapons, the OC, quoting the physicians, said they were not aware of the rules.
Ali Azam said as per rules if anyone has a valid firearm or bullet, the security personnel have to be notified at the time of entry.
Later, the airport authorities would load the pistol or bullet into a special box and hand it over to the pilot, he said.
After the aircraft reached its respective destination, the pilot would return the firearm or bullet to the passenger through the airport authorities, he added.
