Bangladesh has recorded the highest ever seven-day moving average of daily deaths from Covid-19 – 100 – since the pandemic broke out in March last year.
According to the latest figures released by the authorities, the country reported 98 deaths in the 24 hours to Thursday morning, taking the tally of fatalities to 10,781.
The seven-day moving average of daily deaths never went past 45 in all of last year and only on April 4 it crossed 50.
The number was in single digits as recently as on March 11. Since then, the country is seeing an alarming spike in Covid-19 deaths.
The country also logged a total of 736,074 coronavirus cases with 4,014 people testing positive over the same period.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Thursday.
Of the 98 deceased – 62 men and 36 women – 55 were from Dhaka division; 20 from Chittagong; six from Rajshahi; five each from Khulna and Mymensingh; four from Sylhet, and three from Rangpur division.
Of them, 46 patients died in government hospitals, 46 in private hospitals, and six at home.
Fifty-nine of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 20 between 51 and 60, 14 between 41 and 50, two between 31 and 40, one between 21 and 30, and two aged between 11 and 20.
So far, 7,948 men (73.72%) and 2,833 women (26.28%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
Since the beginning, 6,292 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,946 in Chittagong, 571 in Rajshahi, 660 in Khulna, 317 in Barisal, 359 in Sylhet, 407 in Rangpur, and 229 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.46%.
The health authorities said 7,266 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 642,449 patients – 87.28% – have made full recovery across the country.
As many as 27,429 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 349 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 14.63%. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 13.95%.
Currently, 19,000 people are in isolation and 53,368 are quarantined.
On Thursday, another 16,817 people got the first dose, taking the total number of first doses to 5,761,902. While 137,798 got the second dose during the same time, taking the total vaccinated to 1,815,987.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,074,945 lives and infected 144,571,171 people across the world till Thursday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 122,758,049 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
