A case has been filed in this regard
Police arrested four members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and a woman for their alleged involvement in extortion in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area on Friday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Shafiqul Islam told the media three of the four arrested were members of Bangladesh Army and the other one was a member of Bangladesh Air Force.
However, one more was on the run who was a member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The commissioner said a case was filed with Hatirjheel police station based on the allegation. Although the case was filed, all four of them were handed over to their own forces. Their trial will be held according to the law of their respective forces.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka Court placed one of the accused, Ranu Begum on a two-day remand for interrogation.
According to case statements, the victim Tamjid Hossain went out from their house for Uttara on Thursday morning. Later, one of the arrested, identifying as a high official of RAB, contacted Raiana Hossain, Tamjid’s sister, saying his brother was in their custody and asked Tk2 crore as ransom.
They told her not to inform the police. The victim’s sister called the number repeatedly but nobody picked. Later that person told her that the senior officials were interrogating Tamjid and an arms cases will be filed against him.
The voice did not want to disclose at which RAB office he had been interrogated rather asked her to manage Tk2 crore if she wanted to see Tamjid alive.
Her brother also talked to her at that time and informed that he was picked up in a car, blind folded and beaten up. Later, as the victim’s family said they did not have that much money, they asked them to go to Jamuna Future Park with Tk12 lakh as ransom.
The RAB members threatened to kill the victim in “crossfire” otherwise.
