The prosecutor for the Avijt murder case on Wednesday sought the death penalty for six militants charged with his murder.

On February 26 2015, blogger Avijit Roy, an American citizen, was murdered near the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of DU while attending the Amar Ekushey Book Fair. His wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya was severely wounded in the attack.

Md Golam Sharuar Khan Zakir, the special public prosecutor of the case, requested the highest punishment after concluding the prosecution's argument before the tribunal, on behalf of the state in the case.

After concluding the hearing, Judge Md Md Majibur Rahman of Dhaka’s Anti Terrorism Special Tribunal, fixed the date for the defense argument. It will take place on Thursday, February 4.

Zakir stated that they were able to prove the charges made regarding the incidents against the accused.

During the hearing, Prosecutor Zakir also cited different points and information from the statements of 28 prosecution witnesses. A total of 34 statements were made.

The accused are: terminated army Major Syed Ziaul Haque alias Major Zia, Abu Siddique Sohel alias Shahab, Mozammel Hossain alias Saymon alias Shahriar, Arafat Rahman alias Siam, Shafiur Rahman Farabi and Akram Hossain alias Abir alias Adnan.

Arafat, Saymon, and Sohel provided confessional statements before the court. Zia and Akram have escaped.

All of the accused are members of banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam, formerly known as Ansarullah Bangla Team.

According to the charge sheet, Zia ordered the murder of blogger and writer Avijit Roy during the Amar Ekushey Book Fair at the Bangla Academy on the Dhaka University (DU) campus in 2015.

A case regarding his murder was filed with Shahbagh police station in 2015, and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) created the investigation. Later, the investigation was transferred to the CTTC unit.
