People in Northern region suffer due to bone-chilling cold

Temperatures across the country have dropped again as winter intensifies its cold grip.

It’s likely to continue for the next couple of days before the mercury may rise a little, according to the Met office.

Temperature over the country will remain the same for the next two to three days and they will increase slightly afterwards, Meteorologist Omar Faruk told the media.

“However, temperatures will not rise too much this month. The cold wave will last for a few more days and the sharpness of winter will subside after that,” he added.

A mild cold wave is sweeping over Rangpur Division and the regions of Tangail, Gopalganj, Mymensingh, Sreemangal, Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogaon, Jessore and Chuadanga and it may continue, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

In divisional cities, the lowest temperature in Dhaka was recorded at 12.3°C, Mymensingh at 9.8°C, Chittagong at 15.4°C, Sylhet at 12.5°C, Rajshahi at 9°C, Rangpur at 10.3°C, Khulna at 13°C and Barisal at 11.4°C.

Weather may remain dry with a temporary partly cloudy sky over the country, according to the BMD’s forecast.

Moderate to thick fog may occur at places over the river basins of the country and light to moderate fog may occur elsewhere from midnight to morning, it added.

Northern Bangladesh shivers in cold

The lowest temperature in the country on Friday was recorded in Naogaon’s Badalgachi upazila at 6.5°C, which is the lowest temperature recorded this season, said the district Met office.

The seasonal paddy planting in the area is being hampered due to the bone-chilling cold.

Meanwhile, people of Dinajpur’s Hili area, especially the elderly and the children, have been suffering from various cold-related diseases due to the severe grip of winter.

Day labourers of the region are in dire straits as they cannot go out to work in the chilly weather.

The lowest temperature in Dinajpur on Friday was recorded at 7.9°C, the second lowest of the day across the country.

In Kurigram, the hustle and bustle of everyday life came to a stop as a mild cold wave swept across the area, reports UNB.

Subal Chandra Sarkar, officer-in-charge of the district Met office, said the temperature dropped to 8.8°C in the district on Friday and may fall further in the coming days.

As the weather is getting colder, more and more people are getting admitted to hospitals with diarrhoea, pneumonia and other cold-related diseases.
