Protesters urge police to bring to book people who spread misinformation regarding victim’s age and promoted victim blaming
Students of Mastermind School on Thursday held a protest demanding exemplary punishment for the culprit who raped their friend and schoolmate, an O Level student who died from hemorrhagic shock after being raped, through a Speedy Trial Tribunal, free of any external influence.
Schoolmates and teachers of the victim and the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad jointly organized a human chain in front of the school in Dhaka's Dhanmondi 32 area and presented their four-point demand.
“The government should keep the victim’s family updated regarding any development in the case,” Srabon Chowdhury, classmate of the victim, said while reading out the demands.
“DNA tests of three associates of accused Dihan, who were released by police, should also be conducted,” Srabon added. The protesters also urged the Cyber Crime Unit of police to bring to book the people who spread misinformation regarding the victim’s age and promoted victim blaming.
“The government needs to ensure women’s security in the streets and raise awareness about the concept of consent as many people including the accused said that intercourse took place with mutual consent,” Srabon said.
Neha Zaman, another classmate of the victim, said: “People are engaging in victim blaming after several personal photos of the victim surfaced online. Those were taken from her phone which was seized by law enforcers.”
She requested the Cyber Crime Unit to remove those contents and demanded capital punishment for Dihan.
The victim’s mother pleaded with the government and the prime minister to ensure justice for her daughter through a proper investigation.
“All of the culprits should be brought under justice. Three associates of Dihan helped him take my daughter to the hospital. But police released the three and excluded them from the case ignoring our complaints,” she added.
She expressed the hope that justice would prevail and demanded that the culprits be handed the death sentence for her daughter’s rape and murder.
Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Assistant General Secretary Masuda Rehana Begum called for a proper investigation and a fair trial.
She also promised to provide the victim’s family with legal support on behalf of her organization.
Following the protest in front of the school, the students marched towards the National Parliament House holding banners and placards.
The victim’s father also joined the procession and requested the prime minister to ensure justice for his daughter.
On January 7, the victim left her house at around 11:45am after informing her mother over the phone that she was going to a coaching class to collect some worksheets, according to the case statement.
Dihan called the victim's mother at 1:18pm and said her daughter had gone to his house in Kalabagan’s Lake Circus area and had fallen sick.
Dihan asked the victim’s mother to go to the emergency department of Anwer Khan Modern Hospital in Kalabagan, where her daughter had been taken.
When she reached the hospital, the on-duty doctor informed her that her daughter had been murdered after rape, said the case statement.
The parents of the victim later learnt that Dihan had asked the victim to go to his flat, which was empty save for his presence, as the other members of his family were out at the time. He raped their daughter there and took her to the hospital when she started to bleed profusely.
According to Dihan’s confession in court, police also said Dihan had a plan and intentionally called the victim to his house. He admitted that he had developed a friendly relationship with the victim “which may turn into a love affair”.
Dihan’s DNA has been collected by the authorities. He made a confessional statement before a Dhaka court claiming that he had committed the act on his own “with the consent of the victim”.
The security guard of Dihan’s Lake Circus house was made a witness to the incident as police earlier said that he [the guard] had helped Dihan carry the victim out of the house.
