Due to increased supply prices have been on a steady decline for a couple of weeks now

Update : 18 Dec 2020, 07:20 PM

In the kitchen markets of the capital, the prices of all kinds of vegetables have come down further in a week.

According to traders, vegetable prices have been declining for three consecutive weeks due to increased supply.

However, the price of local onions has gone up by Tk5-10 per kg within a week. They said that the price had gone up due to a low supply of onions in the market caused by foggy weather.

On Friday, a visit to the market revealed that local onions were being sold at Tk60 per kg. The price was Tk50 per kg last week.

Imported Indian onions are available at Tk30 to 40 per kg as before. Large onions imported from China and Myanmar are being sold at Tk20 per kg.

The prices of vegetables have come down as compared to last week due to an increase in the supply of winter vegetables like cauliflowers, cabbages, beans, radishes and turnips. Most of the vegetables have been available for around Tk30 for about a month now. Some vegetables are also available at Tk20.

However, the price of ripe tomatoes and string beans is still quite high. Ripe tomatoes cost Tk80-100 per kg like last week. And string beans were being sold at Tk60-80 per kg like last week.

It has been seen in different markets of the capital that old potatoes are being sold at Tk40 per kg. A month ago, new potatoes were sold for over Tk100 per kg, but now the price is Tk50-60.

Md Zaidul Islam, a businessman in Manik Nagar, told Bangla Tribune: "The price of new potatoes has gone up by Tk10 per kg due to declining supplies. The price of local onions has also increased by Tk10 per kg.”

Although the price of potatoes has come down, the price of onions has gone up. Commenting on the rise in onion prices, Kawran Bazar trader Safiq Ehsan said: "Trucks are stuck at the ferry terminal due to fog. Due to this, the supply of onions in the market has decreased a bit. As a result, prices have risen.”

It has been observed that beans are being sold at Tk20 per kg like last week; two months ago the price of beans was Tk120. Cauliflowers and cabbages are being sold for Tk20 per piece, radishes at Tk10 per kg, gourds at Tk30, carrots at Tk40 per kg, eggplants at Tk30 per kg, bitter gourds at Tk40 per kg, ladies’ fingers at Tk40 per kg and palwal at Tk30 per kg.
