The initiative was taken after it was revealed that their yield - low in demand - were not fetching fair prices
Leading super shop chain Shwapno purchased 15,000 kilograms of radishes from farmers across Lalmonirhat to support them amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The initiative was taken after it was revealed that their yield - low in demand - were not fetching fair prices, said a press release.
The bulk purchase was made at the Haribhanga area of Sadar upazila on Sunday.
"As farming was my only means of livelihood, I was wary after most of my radishes were not bought by any customers due to lack of demand. After getting word of our hardship, Shwapno stepped forward and purchased many of our stock in cash," said Md Majmul Haque, a farmer.
"With Shwapno's support, we will be able to produce profitable crops in the near future. We won't have to count our losses if we get a reliable market for our produces," said Moinul Islam, another farmer.
Sajjadul Haque, head of purchase at Shwapno, said: "Shwapno stands by producers and farmers in all circumstances. We bought products directly from farmers across the country during the coronavirus period. This time we chose to stand by the farmers of Lalmonirhat."
