Hefazat-e-Islam leader says he loves Bangabandhu more than party, ideology

Amid growing criticism over his over controversial remarks on a proposed sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque has now condemned the vandalism of a statue of the Father of the Nation in Kushtia.

In a Facebook Live video on Monday evening, the Islamist leader went on to say that he loves and respects Bangabandhu beyond his party and its ideology but that does not mean he will retreat from his opposition of statues.

The video comes hours after an application was filed with a Dhaka court for a sedition case against him for his remarks on the proposed sculpture of Bangabandhu.

“An unwarranted situation surfaced through the damaging of the statue in Kushtia, which is unexpected, unfortunate and condemnable. Many are trying to link me to the incident. I strongly say that I never told anyone to take the law in their own hands in any of my speeches. Nobody who is respectful of the law of the country can ever do this,” Mamunul said.

The Hefazat leader further said: “My statement is clear: sculptures are haram [forbidden] and illegal in Islam, which I conveyed the authorities concerned. There has been a countrywide trend to construct statues of Bangabandhu and we oppose such acts.

“Installing sculptures of the dead will never raise their honour, as many people and animals may leave them dirty and anti-social activities may increase centring the statue venues,” he added.

“So, installing Bangabandhu’s statues here and there won’t increase his honour; rather it may work the other way around,” the Islamist leader warned.

Mamunul also said: “I vigorously say I love and respect the leader of independence beyond any party and values. I also pray for the salvation of his soul.

“I recall Bangabandhu as a late Muslim leader. He will feel shy in front of Allah if his statues are installed. We don’t want him to be embarrassed in such a situation, so we don’t want the government to put up the statues,” he said.

“We will keep requesting this,” he added.
