The independent candidate’s election office and a vehicle used for campaign purpose were also vandalized during the clashes
At least three people have been injured as supporters of independent candidate Abu Jaher and Awami League candidate Jahangir Khan Chowdhury clashed over the upcoming Comilla's Brahmanpara Upazila Parishad (UP) by-election.
Separate clashes took place in Sabujpara, Baradhushia and Dhanyadaul areas of the upazila on Saturday night.
Locals said a clash broke out between the supporters over the construction of Abu Taher’s election office in Sabujpara area around 8:30pm and continued till 10pm.
The office was vandalized and as the news spread in Baradhushia and Dhanyadaul areas, clashes broke out there as well.
Meanwhile, a vehicle belonging to the independent candidate used for campaign purpose was vandalized in Dhanyadaul area. Police later reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Brahmanpara police station Officer-in-Charge Azam Uddin Mahmud confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
The by-election of the Upazila Parishad is scheduled to be held on December 10.
