State Minister for Shipping has said the workers’ demands are logical
Bangladesh Cargo Vessels Owners Association's (BCVOA) leaders have said they will sit for a discussion once the workers withdraw their strike.
“We will not sit for any discussion before the workers’ strike is lifted, as their (workers’) demands are illogical,” Khurshid Alam, former senior vice president of BCVOA said in a press conference in Dhaka on Thursday.
“We are providing all of their benefits following the 2016 Wage Gazette, whose tenure is until June 2021. So, demanding more benefit is illegal,” he said
Meanwhile, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said workers’ demands are logical and owners should agree with the demands.
He made the statement during a press briefing at the secretariat on Thursday.
The water transport workers have been continuining their indefinite countrywide strike for the third consecutive day to press home their 11-point demand.
The demands include payment of salaries of the water transport workers as per the gazette announced in 2016, food allowance, health care equipment, provision of appointment letters, issuing identity cards and service books to workers, ensuring their social security, compensation of Tk10 lakh for those killed in workplace accidents and effective measures to stop extortion on the waterways.
