A former Jatiya Party lawmaker's son has died, reportedly jumping off the balcony of his 8th floor flat in Kathalbagan, Dhaka.
The incident took place around 4am on Friday.
Barrister Asif Imtiaz Khan Jisad, 33, son of Shahidul Islam Khan, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition. He was pronounced dead by the duty doctor, confirmed DMCH police outpost in-charge, Inspector Bachchu Mia.
The body was kept at the morgue for autopsy, he said, adding that Kalabagan police are investigating the matter.
Asif's brother-in-law, Simon Shahid Nishad, said Asif had a love marriage with his elder sister Sabrina Shahid Nishita four years ago, but Asif's family did not accept it.
Under these circumstances, Asif was staying at his father-in-law's home in Kathalbagan, he said.
"Asif and Sabrina sometimes quarreled over family matters. A drug addict, Asif had finished four months of rehab also."
Nishad said the couple who had no children, locked into a quarrel again last night and at one point, Asif jumped over the railing of the verandah.
"He was first taken to Square Hospital before being rushed to DMCH," Nishad added.
Shahidul Islam, former Jatiya Party lawmaker from Sirajganj 5 constituency (1986-90), said his son was a lawyer of the Supreme Court. He was also legal adviser to Desh Trading Corporation in Motijheel.
Shahidul said: "His [Asif’s] in-laws' informed us that he was taken to DMCH and his condition was not good. I came here and found him dead.
"We suspect Asif was murdered. He cannot commit suicide."
