Social media giant appoints a Bangla-speaking Bangladeshi to administer local content
Facebook has appointed Sabhanaz Rashid Dia as Bangladesh affairs officer in the Public Policy Department of the social media giant to administer Bangladeshi content.
The technology policy and global development specialist from Bangladesh will also be responsible for a swift resolution of issues which may arise on the social media platform’s Bangladesh space.
The world’s biggest social media platform announced the appointment at a virtual meeting from its regional headquarters in Singapore on Monday.
The meeting was attended by Bangladesh’s Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, the minister said: “We had a three-hour-long meeting with Facebook on Monday, during which the social media platform introduced Dia as their Bangladesh affairs officer.”
Sabhanaz Rashid Dia was appointed to the post in April this year after Facebook had asked for applications for the post of public policy manager and marketing specialist for Bangladesh in July 2019.
She joined Facebook after leaving her previous workplace, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, US, where she was the policy and advocacy lead for Bangladesh and Indonesia.
There she oversaw the foundation's early efforts in Bangladesh in Covid-19 management and led investments with the A2i, Dhaka Shishu Hospital and DHGS on strengthening digital health response.
Dia has also worked for Google, the World Bank and USAID on overseeing programs in Bangladesh as well as some other countries.
She is the founder and CEO of One Degree Initiative Foundation.
