Bimstec officials visit Bangabandhu's mausoleum at Tungipara

They offered prayers for eternal peace of the departed soul of the great leader

The officials of Bimstec Secretariat, led by its Secretary General Ambassador M Shahidul Islam, have paid homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, at Tungipara in Gopalganj.

They laid a floral wreath at Bangabandhu's mausoleum on Sunday and offered prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul of the great leader as well as peace and prosperity of Bangladesh, a press statement said.

The secretary general was accompanied by his wife Jesmeen Islam, Bimstec directors, and other officials of the Bimstec Secretariat in Dhaka.

The Bimstec (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand with a total population of 1.68 billion.

The secretary general of Bimstec also signed the visitors' book kept at the mausoleum. 

"Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a great statesman, who not only liberated the Bengali nation but also became a symbol of struggle for emancipation of the oppressed and disenfranchised all over the world," he wrote.
