Divisional health directorate and district civil surgeon office sources said there are 700 diagnostic centers in six districts of the division
More than 400 private diagnostic centres are operating illegally in Barisal division in absence of proper monitoring and punishment by the authorities concerned.
According to sources, most of the unauthorized diagnostic centres are running without even maintaining the minimum level of safety and health standards required including dispensing of clinical wastage, employing trained staff and utilising modern equipment.
The illegal diagnostic centres have been set up without approval from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), resulting in wrong and improper treatment of the patients.

Dr Basudev Kumar Das, the divisional health director said that of the 700 diagnostic centers in the division, more than 400 are running their business illegally.
Dr Manowar Hossain, district civil surgeon, said only 86 diagnostic centers of 128 in the district have license.
District civil surgeon office sources said clearance certificates from narcotics control, environment, atomic energy departments, and trade license, TIN and vat registration certificates are essential for opening a diagnostic centre.
A three-member probe committee has been formed headed by Dr Masud Alam in this regard.
Steps will be taken as per the reports, the health director added.
Dr Munshi Mobinul Huq, assistant medical officer of district civil surgeon office, said more than 50% of diagnostic centres in the district are running without DGHS approval; as a result, patients are being cheated.
He said a number of dishonest and fake doctors are involved with the illegal business and not even necessary equipment exists in this health centres.
In the last seven days, two diagnostic centers in the city were sealed and fined. Seven were arrested by district administration in this connection.
Only two doctors were designated to inspect the regularities of papers and other documents of the diagnostic centers which is almost impossible, Dr Mobinul added.
Ziaur Rahman, administrative magistrate of district administration, said he has recently conducted drives against illegal diagnostic centres in the district and arrested seven doctors and technicians besides sealing off a number of unauthorized diagnostic centres.
He said approvals for a good number of diagnostic centres have already expired and they are doing business without getting license renewed.
