Water did not breach through the embankment as the river had not been swelling
A 20-metre stretch of Madaripur town protection embankment at Launch-ghat area has collapsed due to the Arial Khan River erosion on Saturday afternoon.
The sudden erosion that began around 4pm has been keeping houses of hundreds of families by the river bank under risk.
Locals began to evacuate from the affected area with necessary goods they possessed after the incident. Local authorities including the Madaripur deputy commissioner, Water Development Board (WDB) executive engineer in the district and Sadar upazila chairman have visited the spot and dumping of geo-bags have been ongoing since Saturday.
Madaripur WDB Executive Engineer Partha Pratim Saha on Saturday said: "Geo-bags are being dumped to reduce the rate of erosion. Around 100 such bags were dumped at the damaged part of the embankment from afternoon to night. We were initially able to reduce the damage." He added that water could not get to the town as the river had not been swelling throughout that day.
