Awami League lawmaker from Naogaon 6 constituency Md Israfil Alam has passed away at Square Hospital in Dhaka.
The lawmaker breathed his last around 6:40am on Monday while undergoing treatment at the hospital, confirmed Raninagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Al Mamun.
Israfil Alam, also the joint secretary of Naogaon district unit Awami League, was put on life support on July 24 after his breathing complexities deteriorated, said his wife Sultana Parvin.
A three-time lawmaker, Israfil earlier recovered from Covid-19, but was admitted to Square Hospital in Dhaka on July 17 after his respiratory distress worsened, said his nephew Monwar Hossain Don.
The member of parliament (MP) left behind his wife, a son, two daughters as well as a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
In the afternoon, a chopper took Israfil's body to his village home in Raninagar. Israfil was born in 1967 to an aristocratic Muslim family of late Azizur Rahman in the village of Jhina in Gona Union of Raninagar upazila.
President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of the Awami League lawmaker, reports BSS.
In a message of condolence, the president said Israfil Alam entered the political arena through labour politics and always spoke for the rights of the hard-working common people of Bangladesh in the parliament.
"Upon his death, the country has lost a promising and dedicated political leader," Abdul Hamid added.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her condolence message, said: "Israfil Alam had dedicated his entire life to the welfare of the country and the nation."
Both the president and the premier prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed their deepest sympathies to the bereaved family members.
Deputy Speaker M Fazle Rabbi Miah and Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Noor-E Alam Chowdhury also expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Israfil.

The cabinet members also include State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian, State Minister for Information Dr Md Murad Hassan, State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Mojumder, State Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali, and State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Zahid Ahsan Russell.
In a condolence message, the information minister called Israfil Alam as “an ideal and patriotic politician.”
