The DGHS has also been asked to conduct a separate inquiry into the allegation
The High Court has directed Shajahanpur police station in Dhaka to record a case against Proshanti Hospital Limited on an allegation relating to its holding back the body of Mohin Uddin Parvez, a Covid-19 patient, in order to coerce Tk1.56 lakh out of the family of the dead man.
The court also directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegation.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim issued the directives on Monday following the virtual hearing of a writ petition seeking necessary directives over the issue.
The court also asked the director general of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to conduct a separate inquiry into the allegation against the private hospital located in Malibagh and submit a report before it in 30 days.
On June 24, a national Bangla daily published a report on the matter. Later on July 8, Supreme Court lawyer Zahir Uddin Limon filed the writ petition with the High Court's virtual bench, annexing the report with the petition.
According to the report, Mohin Uddin Parvez, a coronavirus-infected veterinary doctor from Subarnachar in Noakhali, was admitted to Proshanti Hospital on June 14.
Soon after he was admitted, ICU (intensive care unit) Consultant Dr SM Alim, who is also the owner of the hospital, almost forcibly sent him to the ICU.
Mohin Uddin Parvez died on June 18.
A picture was published in the newspaper showing the left hand of the deceased tied to the hospital bed even after his death.
On the very day, the hospital authorities asked the relatives of the deceased to clear a bill totalling Tk1.56 lakh.
When Rubel, the brother of the deceased, refused to pay the exorbitant amount, Dr Alim and his manager Saiful took away his mobile phone and detained him in a room.
The hospital authorities also warned him that if he did not pay the bill, he would be handed over to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and that the body would be sent to Anjuman Mufidul Islam for burial purposes as an unclaimed body.
Rubel was later released along with the body in the evening after all the bills were paid, according to the report.
