Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Benazir Ahmed addresses a views exchanging ceremony, organized by the Innovation and Best Practice Branch, at police headquarters on Thursday, July 2, 2020 Collected

People's love and respect cannot be bought, but have to be earned, the police chief said

Inspector General of Bangladesh Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has said the manner in which police have stood by the people and protected them during the present Covid-19 pandemic has created a good image for them.

Not only from Bangladesh but people from different parts of the world were also praising Bangladesh Police on social media, he said.

The IGP said: “50 years ago, the great liberation war created an opportunity for policemen to serve the country. Now, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought an opportunity for them to reach out to the people again.”

The police chief made the remarks while exchanging views on the last day of a five-day workshop held at police headquarters. It was organized by the Innovation and Best Practice Branch on Thursday.

Benazir Ahmed said he was working to make the police force modern and people-friendly, suitable for developed countries. That was why he held the workshop, to know the views of all ranks of th police force.

He said he wanted to take the Bangladesh Police to a place where the people truly loved, respected and honoured the police.

The IGP asked “What will happen when the coronavirus is behind us? Shall we go back to the previous state? No, we will not return to where we came from. We will go further from here.”

He said: “People's love and respect cannot be bought, but have to be earned.”

The police chief said from the very first day of the coronavirus infection in the country, members of Bangladesh Police had stood by the people, risking their lives without waiting for any kind of personal protection. As a result, many policemen were unknowingly infected with coronavirus and 44 policemen had died from it.

Police had not only implemented quarantine and lockdown but also had been delivering food at the doorsteps of helpless people. They had been taking sick people to hospitals during the pandemic. If someone had died from coronavirus, the police arranged for his funeral and burial when no relatives came forward, he said.

Benazir said that the police had to come out of all kinds of corruption. No policemen can be associated with drugs.

At the beginning of his speech, the IGP sought salvation for the souls of the martyred police personnel during the pandemic. He expressed deep sympathies to the bereaved members of their families and wished a speedy recovery for the policemen who were infected.

At the workshop, held through segmenting all units of Bangladesh Police into five clusters, more than five hundred police personnel of all ranks from constables to inspectors gave written opinions on good practice, career, corruption, welfare and other issues.
