He is the first known Covid-19 case among the country’s senior Catholic clergy
Holy Cross Archbishop Moses M Costa of Chittagong Archdiocese has tested positive for Covid-19 and is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.
The 70-year-old was admitted to Square Hospital in serious condition on June 13, and tested Covid-19 positive the next day, Chittagong Catholic Archdiocese Secretary Manik Willver D’Costa told Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.
“His health condition has not improved or worsened. He is on oxygen support,” said Manik.
The archbishop is undergoing treatment at Square Foundation Unit, which is dedicated to keep Covid-19 patients isolated, said the hospital’s officials.
Archbishop Costa is the secretary-general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Bangladesh and chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Healthcare Commission.
He is the first known Covid-19 case among the country’s senior Catholic clergy.
Before serving as the archbishop in Chittagong, Costa served as the bishop of Chittagong and Dinajpur since 1996.
The novel coronavirus has so far infected over 90,000 people and killed over 1,200 in Bangladesh.
