Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has added four high-speed interceptor vessels equipped with sophisticated weapons.
BGB’s Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam confirmed the matter in a press release on Wednesday and said that the vehicles have been added to BGB with sincere desire and direct direction of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The 40-foot-long, 650-horsepower, three-engine vessel made of Silvercraft 40 model reinforced polymer is capable of carrying 33 soldiers and has a speed of 55 nautical miles or 101 kilometres per hour, the release said.
These vessels are capable of navigating in inclement weather and are equipped with an automatic machine gun, advanced technology satellite navigation system (RADAR), fourth generation GPS, modern sonar system, and many more sophisticated equipment.
The vessels can confirm the position of enemy ships at a distance of 50 km from their own position. These ships also have the capacity to transport two dying patients, the release also read.
The press release said that the BGB has been directly controlling and patrolling Bangladesh's 4,174km land border, where the 160km naval border is with India and 63 km naval border is with Myanmar.
Besides, since 2019, under the direction of the prime minister, the BGB has been engaged in the overall security of St Martin's Island.
The Bangladesh-Myanmar border on the Naf River is used as one of the routes for smuggling yaba.
The constant adoption of new tactics by transnational criminals, human trafficking, smuggling, increasing drug trafficking including yaba, and the ongoing Rohingya situation is a major challenge in effectively controlling the border along the Naf River.
On the other hand, a similar challenge exists in the deep forested Bangladesh-India watershed area of the Sundarbans in Nildumur of Satkhira in the south-western region of Bangladesh, the press release said.
Equipped with firearms, the high-speed interceptor vessels will greatly enhance the BGB's capabilities.
Therefore, in order to ensure the security of St Martin's Island, these advanced technology equipped vessels will play an effective role for securing the river routes in the border areas of the country to further strengthen BGB's patrol activities in the border areas of Bangladesh.
