The Benapol Express and the Kurigram Express will be added to the fleet on Thursday

Nine pairs of passenger trains were added to the operational fleet of Bangladesh Railway (BR) on Wednesday, taking the total number of operational trains to 17 pairs since resuming operations after a long hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Public Relations Officer of Ministry of Railways Shariful Alam confirmed the additions and said that Benapole Express and Kurigram Express will be added to the fleet from Thursday, as they have their day off on Wednesday.

Bangladesh Railway resumed its operation on May 31 after closing for more than 2 months due to the coronavirus epidemic. Initially, it started operations with eight pairs of trains.

Currently, BR is only selling tickets online. Trains are also being filled to 50% of their total capacity in order to avoid crowding at the current time.

According to BR, Teesta Express, Nilsagar Express, Rupsa Express, Kopotakha Express, Madhumoti Express, Meghna Express, Kishoreganj Express, Brahmaputra Express, and Upakul Express resumed operations on Wednesday.

Earlier on May 31, BR resumed its operation with Sonar Bangla Express and Subarna Express on the Dhaka-Chittagong route, Kalni Express on the Dhaka-Sylhet route, Paharika on the Chittagong and Sylhet route, Bonolota Express for Rajshahi, Chitra Express for Khulna, and Panchagar Express and Lalmoni Express.

BR has already announced health guidelines for the safety of passengers and staff amidst the pandemic, but passengers have been observed to not always follow them. Many passengers are board trains without heeding social distancing guidelines, said BR officials working at the Kamalapur Railway Station.
