14 ferries are taking people and vehicles across the river
The flow of people and vehicles is returning to normal at the Shimulia-Kathalbari ferry terminal, gateway to 21 southern districts of the country.
There was a huge rush at the ferry ghats from Friday night till 9am Saturday. About 300 vehicles including private cars, microbuses, and covered vans and trucks laden with goods, were waiting to cross the river.
However, with 14 ferries operating on the route, traffic cleared by 10am on Saturday. Later, the ferries were even waiting for passengers and vehicles to arrive.
BIWTC’s Shimulia Ghat Assistant Manager (Business) Mohammad Foisal said: “There was an extra rush of vehicles and travellers the previous night, but traffic returned to normal by 10am Saturday.”
Mawa police outpost OC, Hilal Uddin, said there was a huge rush on Friday night but other than only 25 goods laden trucks or so, there are no other vehicles waiting to cross the river now.
If the ferries keep running as usual, people headed home will not face any hassles, he added.
