Some 143,067 tons of rice have been allocated for 10 million families
The government has provided relief to 45 million of the over 160 million population of the country as part of its aid program to lessen their suffering amid the existing coronavirus-related shutdown.
The Press Information Department (PID) on Monday issued a handout in this regard, referring to information gathered from 64 districts.
Some 113,802 tons of rice, out of an allocated 143,067 tons meant for 10 million families, had been distributed across the country till Sunday, according to the handout.
Over 30.6 million people — from six million families — have received a little over Tk51.69 crore in cash aid, out of an allocation of about Tk80 crore.
The PID handout also stated that over Tk13.9 crore, out of an allocation of Tk15.94 crore, had been distributed as baby food aid so far among 789,000 people from 383,000 families.
After the country’s first Covid-19 cases were reported on March 8, the government decided to shut down all forms of public transport and close business in order to prevent a further spread of Covid-19.
The lockdown left thousands of people from the underprivileged community around the country suffering hugely, as they lost jobs and so their means of income, prompting the government and many non-government organizations to come forward with aid.
Until Monday afternoon, the health authorities in Bangladesh had recorded 15,691 Covid-19 cases and 239 deaths from the deadly disease.
